The five signals, heaviest first

Each business gets a composite score out of 100, built from five measured signals:

• Sentiment (28%): a synthesis of what recent reviews actually say, praise and complaints alike, not just whether they're positive or negative.
• Rating (26%): the business's aggregate star rating on Google.
• Volume (20%): how many reviews a business has, log-scaled so a clinic with hundreds of reviews doesn't get overwhelmed by one with a handful, but still isn't treated as equivalent to it.
• Recency (12%): how recently people have actually left reviews, since a clinic that hasn't been reviewed in two years tells you less about today's experience.
• Completeness (14%): whether basic listing information (phone number, website, hours, address) is actually present and usable.

Why sentiment carries the most weight

Star ratings are useful but they flatten everything into one number. Two chiropractors can sit at the same 4.3 average while one has a spread of unrelated minor gripes and the other has a repeated complaint about the same issue, whether that's rushed adjustments, billing surprises, or missed appointments. You won't see that pattern in a star average. You only catch it by reading what recent reviewers are actually saying. That's why sentiment is weighted above the raw star rating itself: it's the closest thing we have to a read on what it's actually like to be a patient there right now, not just what the average number implies.

Why the other signals matter

Rating still matters because it's the most direct, widely understood signal of overall satisfaction, and it's what most people check first. Volume matters because five glowing reviews and five hundred glowing reviews are not the same evidence: log-scaling means a clinic still benefits from having more reviews, without letting sheer count alone dominate. Recency matters because clinics change staff, ownership, and standards, and a strong reputation from three years ago doesn't guarantee anything today. Completeness matters in a more practical way: a chiropractor with no listed phone number, no hours, or no address is harder to actually book with, whatever their reviews say.

The honest limits

This method has real boundaries and we'd rather state them than hide them. Businesses with few recent reviews produce a less reliable score by definition, and we label those as low-confidence rather than presenting them with false precision. We synthesise what reviews are saying rather than republishing them word for word, and we always link back to the source on Google so you can read the originals yourself and form your own judgment. A composite score is a starting point for your own research, not a substitute for it.

Scores are earned, not sold

Every score on this site comes from the rubric above and public review data only, and scores are never edited by hand after they're calculated. Where paid placement exists anywhere on this site, it is always labelled clearly as such and it never changes a business's score. Where a list's picks or order involved editorial judgment rather than pure ranking, that is disclosed on the page itself, such as our best sports chiropractic clinics list.
