What is trigger point therapy?

Trigger point therapy is a hands-on treatment that uses sustained pressure on hyperirritable muscle knots to release tension, reduce referred pain, and restore normal muscle function.

Trigger points are localized, hyperirritable spots within muscle tissue that develop from repetitive strain, poor posture, or acute injury. These knots become tense and sensitive, often referring pain to other areas of the body far from their actual location. For example, a trigger point in the neck muscles may cause headaches or shoulder pain.

Trigger point therapy addresses these knots through direct manual pressure applied by a practitioner's fingers, knuckles, or specialized tools. The pressure is held at varying intensities to stimulate the muscle to release its tightness and restore normal contraction patterns. As the knot loosens, blood flow improves to the area and pain signals typically diminish.

This technique differs from general massage in its precision: the therapist targets specific, identified knots rather than broad muscle groups. It is commonly used alongside chiropractic care, physiotherapy, and sports injury treatment to address musculoskeletal pain, restore range of motion, and prevent re-injury. Many practitioners in the Klang Valley region integrate trigger point therapy into their treatment protocols for conditions ranging from chronic back pain to repetitive strain injuries.

Trigger point therapy works best when combined with proper ergonomics, stretching, and movement correction to address the underlying cause of muscle tension.
