What is a subluxation?

In chiropractic practice, a subluxation is a partial misalignment or restricted movement of a spinal vertebra that chiropractors believe interferes with nerve function and requires spinal adjustment.

Chiropractors in Klang Valley use the term subluxation to describe a spinal vertebra that has shifted slightly out of alignment or lost its normal range of motion. This differs from a medical dislocation, which is a complete separation of joint surfaces. A subluxation is a partial or functional restriction that a chiropractor identifies through physical examination, imaging, or movement assessment.

The concept is central to chiropractic philosophy: chiropractors believe that subluxations interfere with nerve pathways and can lead to pain, reduced mobility, and other health issues. A vertebra pinching or irritating a nerve root, for example, may cause radiating pain down the arm or leg. Vertebral segments that move stiffly or unevenly can also create muscle tension and postural strain.

When a chiropractor diagnoses a subluxation, it forms the foundation of their treatment plan. The goal of spinal adjustment is to restore proper alignment and movement to the affected joint, removing nerve interference and allowing the spine to function more freely. This is why subluxation detection and correction is considered the core of chiropractic care in the Klang Valley region.

Note that medical doctors typically do not use the term subluxation in this functional sense. The difference in terminology reflects different training and treatment philosophies between the two professions.
