What is a spinal adjustment?
A spinal adjustment is a manual or instrument-assisted technique chiropractors use to apply controlled force to vertebrae, restoring joint movement and alignment.
Chiropractors perform spinal adjustments by applying controlled force directly to vertebrae or nearby tissues to restore normal movement in joints that have lost mobility, a condition called a subluxation or vertebral misalignment. The adjustment can be delivered by hand, using the chiropractor's fingers, thumbs, or palm, or with mechanical instruments like an activator or drop table that generates the force.
When performed correctly, an adjustment often produces an audible "pop" or crack. This sound typically results from gas bubbles forming and collapsing in the synovial fluid around the joint, not from bones moving back into place as commonly believed.
Spinal adjustments differ from related techniques. Massage targets muscle tension and tissue health, while mobilization involves slower, gentler movements within the joint's natural range. An adjustment applies sudden, controlled force past the point of resistance, intended to restore motion that has been restricted by misalignment, injury, or wear.
The goal is to reduce nerve interference, decrease pain, improve function, and support the body's natural healing. Chiropractors in Klang Valley use adjustments as a primary treatment for conditions affecting the neck, mid-back, and lower back, though some patients seek them for general spinal health and maintenance.
