What is cavitation (joint popping sound)?
Cavitation is the sudden release of gas bubbles from synovial fluid in joints, which produces the audible cracking or popping sound commonly heard during chiropractic adjustments.
When a chiropractor applies a controlled force to a joint during an adjustment, the pressure inside the joint space changes rapidly. This sudden pressure drop allows dissolved nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide gases in the synovial fluid to form and collapse bubbles, creating the distinctive popping or cracking sound. This process is called cavitation.
Many people worry that this sound means their bones are grinding together or that damage is occurring. In reality, cavitation is a normal and harmless mechanical response. The sound itself carries no clinical significance for the safety or effectiveness of the adjustment. Joints throughout the spine, neck, shoulders, and limbs can cavitate when adjusted correctly.
The same phenomenon occurs when you crack your knuckles. After cavitation happens, the gases gradually dissolve back into the synovial fluid over the next 15 to 30 minutes, which is why the same joint cannot produce the popping sound repeatedly in quick succession.
